Household storage describes putting household items such as kitchen appliances, furniture, and seasonal deco items or clothing in independently-lockable storage units in mini or self-storage facilities. There are no deposits in mini storage, and you can rent units either by the week or month.

Best storage container for your household items?

Many of our customers ask whether to use plastic containers or cardboard boxes for household storage. The answer is: it depends.

In most cases, we recommend cardboard boxes instead of plastic bins, as they are ideal for self-storage. Plastic containers often trap moisture inside the box. Although professional storage facilities have industrial-standard dehumidifiers, if some moisture is trapped within the plastic container, mold can form.

Buy some ‘desiccators’ and put them in your cardboard box, these small packages you can find inside the box when buying new electronics. They are good for absorbing moisture inside the box! They are also inexpensive and can be purchased in bulk, e.g. here on Tiki.

Another good tip is using ‘cedar wood’ chips: To prevent little creatures from being attracted to your valuables, you might consider throwing some cedar shavings (you can find them on Shopee) on your clothes. These will deter pests, smell much better than mothballs, and contain no pesticides that harm your furniture.

To get your items ready for household storage, it is vital to thoroughly clean and dry all items, before you put them in cardboard boxes.

 

How much does it cost put household items in storage?

Prices for household storage in Hanoi depend on the size, duration, and location of the specific storage unit you are renting. Mini storage units on the ground floor right next to the entrance have a higher rental price compared to units located further away from the entrance or exit. The facility manager of the storage facility should be able to easily assist you in figuring out how much space you require.

 

How to find nearby self-storage units?

Certain countries have storage aggregator platforms like sparefoot.com, making it easy to find and compare different mini storage offers. In Vietnam, and in particular in Hanoi, such platforms don’t exist yet. In most cases, simply googling for terms such as “mini storage +city”, or ‘self-storage near me” is the way to go!
