using storage for the first time

Here are our essential tips.

1/ Gather all important items

Before you store all items you can find, select those you don’t need anymore, and either sell, donate or dispose of those. We recommend only putting important items in storage! If you like to donate items to a charity, you can find some here:

• Check with the “Youth Union” of your Ward (Đoàn Thanh niên phường)
• E2K project (https://www.facebook.com/duanE2K/)
• Hội từ thiện Xanh (http://tuthienxanh.com/)
• Blue Dragon organization (https://www.bluedragon.org/)

2 / Avoid prohibited items

Most storage facilities have clear rules about what you can, and what you can not store! Make sure you don’t store items that are prohibited to be stored, such as any sort of food, liquids, pet supplies, weapons, ammunition, gasoline, etc. Find a full list for example here –>

3 / Stack them up

Now the fun part begins. Stack all your items in one area, and vertically stack them on top of each other. Check how many square meters (width by length) and cubic meters (width by length by height) your items take up. This is great to know when you ask for quotes/estimates. Learn more about how to stack items vertically here, or read about how much stuff actually fits into our smallest unit!

4 / Take snapshots

Take a couple of photos of your items, and/or create a quick list – this will come in handy in a few months when you forgot what you actually put in your storage unit 😉

5 / Ask for quotes

Head online and google for ‘self-storage +city’, or ‘mini storage +city’, for example “self storage hanoi“).  If you like to do a search in Vietnamese, you can try ‘kho mini +city’, e.g. “kho mini ha noi“, or ‘cho thue kho +city’. Mark those facilities with the best location relative to yours. Contact them and ask for availability and pricing. Only use storage operators that show actual images of their facility! Ask the facility manager when you can do the move-in.

6 / Get insurance

Your items will sit next to the items of other customers, that’s why it is important to get personal liability insurance. This protects you if you accidentally damage the goods of other customers! Ask the facility manager what they can offer, it’s usually a small monthly fee.

7/ Arrange the move-in

Arrange transportation or head over to the facility. Bring your own padlock, or buy one at the facility. Put all your valuables in your newly rented self-storage unit, and take the keys with you. Keep the keys in a safe place.

Congratulations.

You are done. ✅
